REME Freedom of the Town event - Sunday 26th October

On behalf of Wokingham Town Council, the Town Clerk would like to make you aware of a very important and prestigious event which will take place on Sunday 26th October.

The Corps of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) will exercise their right to march, with fixed bayonets, through the town to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Corps leaving Arborfield.

In 1978, the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, then based in Arborfield, became Honorary Townspeople of Wokingham after thirty-six years association with our town.  Over the years, Wokingham has seen many different troops on parade marching through the town with swords drawn and bayonets fixed, each time with the Mayor and other dignitaries taking the salute and inspecting the parade.

Led by a full military band, the REME parade will take place on Denmark Street at 11.00am and is estimated to last for approximately one hour.

In addition to the parade, the usual market place will be occupied by exhibits from the REME Corps Engagement Team which will include some military vehicles.  The stalls and displays will be setting up from 9.00am on Sunday morning and will be available to the public until 1.30pm when they will start packing away.

We believe that this will be a wonderful opportunity to bring the local community together and to share an enjoyable and memorable FREE event to commemorate the departure of the REME and celebrate the historic links we have with them.

More details of the event are available on our website via the following link:
